The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, sent a message questioning the 25% tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on Mexican products. Sheinbaum asserted in a video that the measure will affect both Mexico and the United States because it will increase the price of several products. She expressed that "Unilaterally, the government of the United States has decided to increase tariffs on products imported from Mexico to the United States. We are a free, independent, and sovereign nation."
Sheinbaum called on Mexicans to a rally on Sunday, March 9, at the Zócalo in Mexico City, where she will present her plan against the 25% tariffs. She emphasized that the Zócalo is the best place to make decisions together. Following the U.S. resolution on tariffs against Mexico, the president announced that she would respond with tariff and non-tariff measures.
Trump's measure is a response to the trafficking of fentanyl from Mexican cartels. Sheinbaum mentioned that they have been in conversations with the U.S. government during the month of tariff pause. She commented that the measure will affect businesses in Mexico and the Mexican people, but will also impact the population of the United States by increasing prices of many products made in Mexico.
Sheinbaum criticized Trump's taxes, stating that they had reached agreements during the month of pause. She expressed that "This measure is unilateral. A series of agreements had been reached, which is why we do not understand, and we do not believe that these tariffs are necessary." The president invited continued dialogue but reaffirmed that the Mexican people are firm and proud.
